With the end of the NBA’s moratorium and Vegas Summer League beginning, here’s a look at the latest intel gathered by HoopsHype on Knicks trade talks for Paul George, Immanuel Quickley’s looming extension talks with New York, free agency updates for the Mavericks, Bucks, Suns, Raptors, Clippers, Celtics, Rockets, Spurs, Pelicans, Hornets, and much more.

The Knicks and Clippers originally had trade talks surrounding Paul George at the NBA draft. At the time, New York was considering a package featuring Obi Toppin, Quentin Grimes, Evan Fournier, and three first-round picks in exchange for George, league sources told HoopsHype. Toppin was then traded to the Pacers for two second-round picks, as ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski reported.
After that, RJ Barrett’s name was brought up briefly in trade talks by the Clippers in place of Toppin, league sources told HoopsHype. However, the asking price of parting with Barrett, Grimes, three first-round picks, and then having to negotiate a long-term extension for George, who’s 33 years old, was too high for the Knicks.
New York continues to monitor the market in search of adding another star player alongside Jalen Brunson and Julius Randle to bolster the team’s chances of competing in the East.
Heading into free agency, the Knicks were interested in several players to fortify their rotation, including Bruce Brown, Max Strus, and Yuta Watanabe, before ultimately agreeing to a deal with Donte DiVincenzo, league sources told HoopsHype.
With Toppin’s departure and not landing a power forward in free agency like Watanabe, the Knicks currently plan to give Isaiah Roby an opportunity as the primary backup forward to Julius Randle, HoopsHype has learned. Josh Hart is also expected to get some minutes as a small-ball power forward.

Knicks guard Immanuel Quickley, who finished second in the NBA’s Sixth Man of the Year race, will be eligible for a contract extension. As previously mentioned on a Knicks edition of the HoopsHype podcast at the end of May, Quickley’s floor is considered four years, $80 million around the league, with the possibility for a higher payday if he carries the momentum from last season and continues to improve.
The Knicks would consider an extension for Quickley around $20 million per year, league sources told HoopsHype. Should Quickley play himself into a higher average annual salary, the Knicks may consider trading him as part of a package to acquire a star player.

As first reported by The Athletic, the Dallas Mavericks are finalizing a four-year, $53 million sign-and-trade deal to acquire Boston Celtics restricted free agent Grant Williams, league sources confirmed to HoopsHype. The deal is fully guaranteed for Williams with no options, HoopsHype has learned. WME Sports agents Bill Duffy and Erik Kabe negotiated the contract.
Williams is expected to net approximately $4-5 million more by signing with the Mavericks than if he signed the same deal with the Celtics due to state income taxes. The Celtics never offered more than $50 million guaranteed over four years during extension talks with Williams, as previously reported by HoopsHype.

The Milwaukee Bucks agreed to a one-year, $2.7 million deal with guard Malik Beasley, league sources told HoopsHype. Beasley led the NBA in three-pointers made off the bench last season, and the Bucks needed depth at shooting guard. Newly hired Bucks coach Adrian Griffin spoke with Beasley as part of a recruiting pitch, sources said.
Dallas considered a sign-and-trade possibility with the Lakers for Beasley during the process, league sources told HoopsHype. The Bucks, Sixers, Suns, Raptors, Mavericks, and Warriors expressed interest in Beasley, as previously reported on HoopsHype.
Forwards Thanasis Antetokounmpo and No. 36 overall pick Andre Jackson Jr. are candidates for roster spots with the Bucks, league sources told HoopsHype. The Bucks also have to decide what type of contract Chris Livingston, the No. 58 overall pick of the draft, will receive.

The Phoenix Suns signed forward Yuta Watanabe to a two-year, $5 million deal, league sources told HoopsHype. The deal includes a player option for the 2024-25 season. Watanabe shot a career-high 44.4 percent on 3-pointers last season with the Brooklyn Nets.

The Toronto Raptors finally landed Jalen McDaniels in free agency after closely monitoring him since he was at San Diego State and attempting to trade for him several times, including at the 2023 trade deadline, league sources told HoopsHype. McDaniels is expected to become an instant rotation player for Toronto next season after averaging a career-high 9.4 points and 23.9 minutes per game last season with the Hornets and Sixers.

Mason Plumlee drew interest from numerous playoff-caliber teams, including the Golden State Warriors and Atlanta Hawks, before ultimately choosing to re-sign with the Clippers, league sources told HoopsHype.
The 10-year NBA veteran set a career-high in player efficiency rating (19.6) last season and averaged 10.8 points, 8.9 rebounds, and 3.1 assists with the Hornets and Clippers last season.

The Charlotte Hornets and Houston Rockets are among the teams that have shown interest in free-agent point guard Aaron Holiday, league sources told HoopsHype. Holiday is considered a 3-and-D point guard during his five-year NBA career thus far as a 37.7 percent shooter from beyond the arc.

Following a three-team sign-and-trade involving the Mavericks, Celtics, and Spurs, which included San Antonio receiving Reggie Bullock and an unprotected 2030 pick swap with Dallas, per The Athletic, the Spurs remain open for business.
San Antonio remains open to taking on unwanted contracts around the league in exchange for draft pick compensation, league sources told HoopsHype.
The Spurs now have $15.1 million in cap space with the acquisition of Bullock. They could have a little more space depending on what they do with Lamar Stevens, as HoopsHype capologist Yossi Gozlan noted.

The New Orleans Pelicans waived 13-year NBA veteran Garrett Temple, as first reported by HoopsHype. Temple’s $5.4 million salary for the 2023-24 season would’ve been fully guaranteed by July 7 if he remained on the roster.
Temple, 37, has been considered a steady veteran locker room presence and mentor over the past six years with Sacramento, Memphis, Los Angeles, Brooklyn, Chicago, and New Orleans.
After waiving Temple and his $5.4 million salary, the Pelicans are still slightly over the luxury tax with 13 players. Another cost-cutting move would have to happen for New Orleans to duck the tax, as HoopsHype colleague Yossi Gozlan noted on Twitter.
With that in mind, Pelicans guard Kira Lewis, who’s owed $5.72 million for the 2023-24 season, could be the next player eventually on the move. Lewis was made available in trade talks ahead of the trade deadline, as reported by HoopsHype.

The Boston Celtics are bringing in forward Alize Johnson for a workout this week, HoopsHype has learned. The five-year NBA veteran is considered a high-motor player and rebounder.

Nine-year NBA veteran Ben McLemore will work out for several teams in Las Vegas during NBA Summer League, HoopsHype has learned. McLemore played for the Shandong Heroes of the Chinese Basketball Association last season and previously averaged 10.2 points for the Portland Trail Blazers during the 2021-22 season.
